DIY Picture Frames From Basic Lumber

It's no secret that I adore Ana White so today I wanted to share a really simple DIY project that anyone can tackle.  If you've ever wanted to build, but thought you would be in over your head, this is the project for you.

It doesn't matter if you have o outdoor space or garage (I don't!) and it's okay if you don't have a power saw (I don't!).  If you have just a little space to work with and you're near a hardware store, you can build these.
Picture
The plans for these frames came from the book The Handbuilt Home by Ana White.  She actually built one of these at her book signing.  I made two frames, one was the 8"x10" from the book and the other was a 1'x2' for a friend's sweet little nursery.  It is super easy to adjust the original plan to fit any size you like.

If you don't have a way to cut boards at home, just ask the staff at your hardware store if they do complimentary cuts.  The folks at my Home Depot were more than happy to do all of the cuts I needed.  I also use a simple hand saw at home and it works really well.  If I can build in a small condo with no outdoor space, you can too.

OK, on to the plans!  I thought the pictures did a better job than words could, but if you have any questions about the details of this process, just leave a comment or send an email and I'll be sure to respond.

I use a Kreg Jig to create pocket holes. You could also use a countersink drill bit and wood screws. Use the 1x3s to create right angle joints.

Attaching the 1x2s with gorilla wood glue.

Good old fashioned hand saw. You CAN build in a tiny condo!

Have fun and good luck!!

Lily B! It was fun making the frame knowing it would end up in your adorable nursery. I can't wait to see it all together with the letters and the new rug! Enjoy your day with mom and dad tomorrow! WFH Fridays are the best!

Love, Aunt Jill

PS - I just pictured you saying Kreg Jig followed by your little husky grandma laugh. It made me giggle.
