Giveaway!  Signed Copy of Appalachian Trials by Zach "Badger" Davis

12/2/2012

Update - we have a winner!  Congratulations, Joe!!  I'll be emailing you soon with the details :-)  Thanks to everyone who entered - I appreciate each of you.  Good luck to you all in your hiking adventures!

I'm pretty excited about this giveaway!  And it comes at the perfect time for those planning a 2013 AT hike.  By now everyone is reviewing their gear list and waiting (not so) patiently for their AT Guide to be shipped.  It can feel all-consuming, in a good way.

So while you're scouring message boards and driving all of your friends crazy with constant talk of the AT, I'd like to suggest a book to feed your eager minds - Appalachian Trials, by Zach Davis.  It focuses on the mental preparation needed for a thru-hike and how you can increase your chances of finishing all 2000+ miles.

In the interest of full disclosure, Zach is a good friend of ours.  (And yes, he's just as funny in person as he is on his blog).  But friendship aside, the book stands on its own.  Every single review on Amazon is a 4 or 5 star rating.  Basically, he's a good guy who deserves every bit of the success he's had.  Which is why we want to spread the love and give one away today!

An extra bonus - Zach has been kind enough to sign a copy for us to giveaway.  There are a couple of different ways you can earn entries into the contest so just follow the instructions below in the rafflecopter widget and you'll be one step closer to owning this bright yellow gem of a book.

And if you don't win, you can always grab a copy on amazon (print or kindle).  It makes a great gift for any hiker and if nothing else, it will look cool on your bookshelf ;-)

Good luck!!!!

UPDATE:  If you opt for one of the "additional entries" such as following us on Twitter, Facebook, or Pinterest, that's great!  But after you submit your contest entry, be sure to use the links provided to follow us on those sites.  If you claim an entry without completing the action (i.e. following us), that entry will be removed before we draw for a winner.

Please know that it's not because we are greedy for followers, we just want to be fair to those who followed the rules and took the time to visit our pages on other sites.  Good luck to everyone - we can't wait to draw the winner and announce on Friday!!

I've been primarily a southwest & midwest hiker, but plan on doing this when I turn from 59 to 60 in about 12 years. I'll be reading about it until then, I'd love to win this book!

I LOVE this book. It is singularly the best source of information about the mental, psychological, and emotional tolls that the AT exacts. It should be required reading before signing the log at Amicalola Falls State Park and heading up the Approach Trail. You will dramatically increase your chance of success by reading this book, not once, but multiple times. I would love to have a signed copy so I could keep it and pass my current copy (complete with colored tabs, highliting and dogeared pages to another 2013 hiker

What a great idea! I love the idea of paying it forward. I saw this book in a lot of shelters last year and thought that was pretty cool. I'm with you on the love for this book! Good luck!

leaving in march! Trying to gather as much information as I can, keep wavering between feeling adequately prepared, and exceptionally unprepared.

Pick your gear (don't sweat the ounces), read this book and let the trail teach you the rest! :-) Enjoy the countdown!!

Zach is my hero!! :-) My trail name is LeConte. However, someone added Dr. LeConte. So I guess Dr. LeConte is my trail name now. I leave Springer March 10. ...and I am so ready to get started.

March is right around the corner, very exciting. Good luck, Dr. LeConte!

I'm starting my thru hike on the Appalachian trail on March 20th or 21st 2013. I originally wanted to make the treck when I was 17; it's taken 42 years to finally commit to make it happen. I think my trail name will be "NH RidgeRunner" or just plain "RidgeRunner" I live in the White Mountains and love the many ridges in my mountains. I would love to read this book before my own adventure of a lifetime.

I know Zach personally because I am him. I can say one thing with great certainty about Appalachian Trials. It is very yellow.

Very, very yellow.

Good luck all.

Another factual statement about the book... it contains a picture of a Zach looking like a homeless clown. You know you want to see that pic and hear that story.

Hi, Jill.
I haven't hiked any of the AT yet (so no trail name), although I have gone up the trail a few hundred yards from the Smokies and one place in Virginia (drove past the sign and said, "oooo, let's stop and go up a few hundred yards!" One day I hope to seriously section hike, and think Zach's book would be great preparation!

Thanks!
Jim E.

Hey Jim! I think it's great that you're waiting to get your trail name on the trail. I lived in Damascus for 3 years before we hiked the trail and I waited and waited for mine, but it was totally worth it. Now when people ask me the story of my name, I actually have a story!

The smokies and VA are near and dear to my heart - you picked good sections to explore!
